Beekeeping, macadamia nuts, and agroforestry — growing more than coffee.

Bee pollinating coffee blossoms on Edelweiss Estate

Apiculture

We maintain 120 modern bee hives across the estate, with twice-yearly honey harvests. The bees provide essential pollination services for our coffee and macadamia crops while supporting overall farm biodiversity.

Harvesting occurs at night to minimise bee disturbance. Our apiculture team processes the honey on-site before returning combs to the hives, ensuring a sustainable cycle that benefits both the bees and our crops.

Macadamia seedlings growing in the estate nursery

Macadamia Nuts

Our commercial macadamia plantation includes a nursery producing 10,000 seedlings annually. We cultivate four varietal trees — Kiambu 3, Embu 1, Kirinaga 15, and Marangu 20 — selected for superior flavour, yield, and suitability for transitional growing zones.

Macadamia farming complements our coffee production, diversifying our agricultural output while maintaining the estate's commitment to quality and sustainability.

Agroforestry trees planted on the estate hillside alongside coffee rows

Agroforestry

Since 2012, we have planted approximately 50,000 trees on land unsuitable for coffee or macadamia cultivation. Species include Pine, Cypress, Cedrella Orodata, and African Teak.

These plantations enhance moisture retention, provide wildlife habitat, and contribute to the long-term ecological health of the estate and surrounding highland environment.
